The Canary Islands consists of 7 larger islands (Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzerote, Tenerife, La Palma, Gomera and Hierro) and of a few smaller ones (Alegranza, Graciosa, Montañia Clare, Roque del Este and Lobos. The landscape of each island is radical different to the others. In this section, focus will be on Fuerteventura, Lanzerote and La Palma. Fuerteventura is the closest Canary Island to the African coast, with only 100 kilometers separating the Punta de la Entallada from Cape Juby in Morocco, and the island is the second largest (after Tenerife) of the Canary Islands. There is nowhere else in the Canary Islands with such enormous sand dunes and long sandy beaches (more than 150), even though most of the island consists of stone and rock. The beaches are some of the most impressive in the whole of Europe. Approx 98 km long and 30 km across at the widest point. Despite tourism being a relatively recent phenomenon on the island, there is a well developed infrastructure with golf courses, a zoo, a water park and numerous marine excursions for big game fishing and diving. The main town of Fuerteventura, Puerto del Rosario is on the westside of the island, it was once called Puerto de Cabras (goat harbor), and even today it is said that goats outnumber people in this whitewashed town. Only recently capitalising on the tourist industry. Lanzarote is situated just 120 kilometers off the coast of Africa and is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. The island is 60 km long and 20 km wide, making it the fourth largest of the Canary Islands. As with the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote is volcanic in origin. Due to resent eruptions during the 18th and 19th centuries, many parts of Lanzarote appear to be from another world. The dry climate has had the effect that the volcanic landscape appears much as it did just after the eruptions, due to lack of erosion. Despite the volcanic nature of the island, Lanzarote has several beautiful white beaches such as at Playa Blanca and Papagayo. Puerto del Carmen is the main city and the most important tourist center. La Palma is a volcanic ocean island, like the other islands of the Canary Islands. The volcano rises almost 7 km above the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. Proportionally to its size, its is allerged to be the steepest island in the world. There is road access from sea level to the very summit at 2,421 meters, which is marked by an outcrop of rocks called Los Muchachos (the lads). La Palma is dominated by the colors blue, green and black. Blue representing the surrounding ocean, green representing the abundant plant life, which is the most diverse in the Canary Islands, and black comes from the volcanic rocks that forms the landscapes and the numerous beaches of black sand. Santa Cruz de La Palma (the islands main port) retains many elegant 17th and 18th century houses, and produces high quality hand made cigars made from locally grown tobacco.
