Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, is located at an altitude of more than 1.6 km. The city is built on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the ancient Aztec capital. Reminders of past civilization pervade the city, particularly at the Templo Mayor excavation. Templo Mayor is known as the main temple of the Aztecs. Results of recent excavations have lead to more and more interesting artifacts in the temple. It was originally built around the early 1300's and you can still view the different shrines to the gods that were build. Many fascinating artifacts are on view in the nearby Museo del Templo Mayor.

Another place of great historical relevance that is located in Mexico City is Teotihuacan. This ancient city is estimated to have been populated by 150 BC. The Aztecs believed that Teotihuacan was a place where the sun, moon and the universe were created. If you visit the site, you can climb both the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon.

Chapultepec Park is a great place to visit if you want to encounter a variety of activities to enjoy. Located within this beautiful park are many great museums, including the Museum of Anthropology.

Mexico City is probably the largest city in the world with an estimated population of more than 20 millions. Visitors to Mexico City will find a cosmopolitan city struggling with the effects of expansion and growth. That said, tourists will still find a pleasant, enjoyable and historic city lying beneath the surface.
