The Yucatán peninsula is today the most popular tourist destination in Mexico, and also the place where you will find most of the holiday resorts. Many of these resorts are of a very high standard.

The peninsula itself is extremely flat with little or no topographic variation. The beaches are the best in the whole of Mexico, and you find some of the most interesting sites from the Maya and Toltec cultures, as well as old colonial style cities. The most popular tourist destinations are Cancún, officially opened in 1974, Playa del Carmen (65 km. south of Cancún), and Mérida, which is Yucatán's biggest city with with a population of around 750,000.
