About Mexico With a population of more than 103 million Mexico is the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world. The most populous city in the country is the capital city, Mexico City, with a population of 8.7 million, and 19.2 million in the whole of the metropolitan area, which furthermore makes it on of the most populous cities in the world. The United Mexican States, or commonly Mexico, comprise a constitutional republic federation of thirty-one states and a federal district (Mexico City). The economy of Mexico is the 14th largest in the world. Mexico has a free market and export-oriented economy and is the only Latin American member of OECD. The Mexican currency is the peso, the exchange rate to USD has remained stable since 1998. Around 21.4 million tourists visited Mexico in 2005 making it the eight most popular tourist destination in the world. The climate in Mexico divides into temperate and tropical zones. This gives Mexico one of the worlds most diverse weather systems. North of the twenty-fourth parallel the temperatures are cooler during winter months. South of the twenty-fourth parallel, temperatures are fairly constant round the year and vary solely as a function of elevation. Many parts of Mexico, particular the north, have dry climate with sporadic rainfall, while parts of the tropical lowlands in the South average more than 200 cm of annual precip.
