About Spain 58.5 million tourists went to Spain in 2007, this makes Spain the second most popular tourist destination in the world, only overtaken by France. Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe (after France), and with an average altitude of 650 m, the second highest country in Europe (after Switzerland). Spain joined the EU in 1986 and on January 1st 1999, adopted the Euro as its national currency. According to the World Bank Spain's economy is today (2007) the fifth largest in Europe and the eight largest in the World. Due to Spain's geografihcal situation, the climate is extremely diverse. The inland areas have a Continental Mediterranean climate, on the coastal areas facing the Mediterranean Ocean, one finds Mediterranean climate, and in Galicia and the coastal strip near the Bay of Biscay there is Oceanic climate. In 2008 the population of Spain officially reached 46 million people. Spain is a constitutional monarchy organized as a parliamentary democracy divided into 17 Autonomous Communities and 2 Autonomous cities (Cueta and Melilla in North Africa).
